Cheers darlin'
Here's to you and your lover boy
Cheers darlin'
I got years to wait around for you
Cheers darlin'
I've got your wedding bells in my ear
Cheers darlin'
You gave me three cigarettes to smoke my tears away
Oliver slammed his money down on the table. "Keep the change," he said to the barkeep.
"You haven't even gotten your drink, yet," the bartender said in surprise as Oliver stood to leave.
Oliver chuckled darkly under his breath, glancing away toward the door. "Yeah, and I already know it won't help."
"Woman troubles?" the other guy asked understandingly.
Oliver jerked his head in affirmation before turning up the collar of his coat, shoving his hands in the pockets of his coat and exiting the bar.
And I die when you mention his name
And I lied, I should have kissed you
When we were runnin' in the rain
And I lied, I should have kissed you
When we were runnin' in the rain
Oliver tried to ignore the couples in the windows he passed, tried to ignore the rain beating mercilessly down on him, shuddering as it reminded him of the day he'd proposed. He'd picked her up at the airport and they'd been caught in the rain on the way to his car. Her clothes had clung to her body as they got soaked, and her hair had stuck to the sides of her face, dripping with rainwater. She'd looked beautiful, even with the dark circles under her eyes, exhausted from the flight.
What am I darlin'?
A whisper in your ear?
A piece of your cake?
What am I, darlin?
The boy you can fear?
Or your biggest mistake?
A whisper in your ear?
A piece of your cake?
What am I, darlin?
The boy you can fear?
Or your biggest mistake?
He wanted to scream. He wanted to demand answers from the universe. He didn't deserve this. He hadn't done anything.
Why couldn't it just end? He wanted to die. Anything but this emptiness, this giant ache inside of him where he was sure other things used to exist.
Cheers darlin'
Here's to you and your lover man
Cheers darlin'
I just hang around and eat from a can
Cheers darlin'
I got a ribbon of green on my guitar
Cheers darlin'
I got a beauty queen
To sit not very far from me
Here's to you and your lover man
Cheers darlin'
I just hang around and eat from a can
Cheers darlin'
I got a ribbon of green on my guitar
Cheers darlin'
I got a beauty queen
To sit not very far from me
How could she leave him? How could she do it? Not that he was that much reason to stick around, he thought self-deprecatingly.
She'd been everything. Everything he ever wanted out of life, and more than he could have deserved.
He thought about going out, getting drunk, finding a woman to sit by his side and pretend to love him for one night. Someone different from Chloe, someone who would be nothing like her. A model, maybe, a stick-figure who didn't eat, with sawdust for brains and dollar-signs in her eyes. A distraction.
But he shook the thought away as beneath him. Beneath them. An insult to what they had had.
I die when he comes around
To take you home
I'm too shy
I should have kissed you when we were alone
He remembered the last time he'd seen her before he came for her. She was ill. Desperately ill, coughing, barely able to talk. Emil had promised him she'd be all right.
He lied.
Nothing would be all right, let alone her.
What am I darlin'?
A whisper in your ear?
A piece of your cake?
What am I, darlin?
The boy you can fear?
Or your biggest mistake?
Why didn't she stay? Why did he have to take her? She should have fought to stay with him, he thought angrily, wishing more than anything that she were still around for him to yell it at. He wanted to hate her for leaving him.
He resented her, hated her for leaving him, for taking a lover, for allowing that most despicable of all beings to take her, to own her.
How could she let Death take her from him?
For it had been Death to wrap her in his icy clutches, to caress her and romance her, to lure her away from him.
Oh what am I? What am I darlin'?
I got years to wait...
I got years to wait...
But as the end of the night came and the rain let up, Oliver slowly found closure. Even as Death had torn them apart, he knew that it would be Death to reunite them in the end.
He was mortal, and all men must die.
